Ellie Mannette, the Father of the modern steel drum, playing a set of guitar pans.

Performing professionally, traveling abroad, teaching privately and publicly, and actively supporting the local arts community has made me aware that our children and the community they live in are in desperate need of Arts Education. Too often I'll attend a weekend evening art exhibit only to see the regular crowd and a few young aspiring artists. I ask myself, Where is everyone else and did the general public even know that this was happening? Recently I've taken action by picking up stacks of promotional flyers for local art events and posting them when I place my own materials at schools, community centers, coffee houses, etc. This is merely advertising, but the old saying, "your mind is like a parachute, it works when it is open," holds true. The more aware and diverse the community becomes in the Arts, the more their own parachute opens and prepares them for those very special moments. Moments when the Arts Educator actually gets the chance to educate in a cross-curriculum style and share the wonderful world of art simultaneously to them.
